Will my student get a supply list for school?
Yes. A recommended supply list for each team is available at the Student Orientation scheduled on August 24th or you may pick one up after that date in the Main Office.
Does SIS offer looping teams?
Yes. Although looping is an option for all students, SIS is not staffed to provide looping for every team. Therefore, 2 out of the 5 teams in each grade level loop, which means the students on a looping team may remain with the same teachers both in grade 7 and grade 8. Looping a student is randomly determined by District’s scheduling program, Infinite Campus. If a student chooses to not loop after being scheduled onto a looping team, he/she may opt out.
What is the Shelton Innovation School (SIS2)? How does a student get selected into the Innovation School?
The concept behind the creation of the Shelton Innovation School is addressing the diverse learning styles that have developed in our 21st century digital world. This idea was developed from the work currently being conducted through the Shelton Strategic Plan led by our Superintendent.
We have moved into an era where the world is processing information at a rapid ever-changing pace. Access to information has changed the way our students learn. Yet, the traditional organizational system of instruction and assessment with schools has basically remained the same since its formal conception nearly 125 years ago.
In SIS2, we intend to change the way we teach in order to address the way students learn. All students will receive the same content standards of education. Our intent is to change the organizational structure within the School of Innovation. This change may be accomplished through systems such as collaborative projects, technology, and blended learning centered on the ideas of problem solving, synthesizing data, and adapting resources; all of which are skills vital in today’s modern world.
There is no application process or criteria to enter the SIS2. Infinite Campus will randomly place students into the 5 Grade 7 teams (2 Innovative and 3 Traditional). Priority always goes to required academic programs (i.e. - special education requirements, 504 accommodations, and match placements). Once required programs have been satisfied, the computer system will fill a student's schedule with elective requests.
We understand that there are many questions regarding this new endeavor. To this end, once all the team placements have been completed, we intend to hold an orientation night for the students and parents scheduled into the Shelton Innovation School. At that time, we are hoping to address any lingering questions. If your child is placed into the innovation school and you believe that he or she would benefit from a traditional setting, we will allow for an opt out.
What is heterogeneous grouping?
Most classes at SIS are grouped heterogeneously. This means that students are grouped together regardless of ability level. Teachers are able to differentiate their instructional strategies to meet each student's individual needs. Because of this system, students will not be in the same group for the entire day, but rather will meet with a different group of peers each period.
What classes are homogeneously grouped?
Only Algebra classes are grouped according to skill level.
What is SIS Period?
SIS is our tiered intervention period. Students are given added instruction based on their individual needs. Tier 3 students receive the most intensive interventions in Math and Reading. Math instruction is based on the areas in which the students need extra practice based on their common formative assessment scores. Reading instruction will be delivered using the Read 180 program, in which the students receive instruction at their individual level to improve fluency and comprehension. Tier 2 students require less intensive instruction, but it is again tailored to their individual needs and is delivered by the team teachers. Students who do not require intervention will receive instruction that supports their current studies and adds to their skill banks. For example, students might be taught to research a topic and write a research paper or extension activities that add to their understanding of a science topic.
How do I get lunch?
Students may purchase hot lunch or they may purchase a-la-carte items, including milk. The Point of Sale program will continue to be used. Students bring in checks before school and drop them off in the cafeteria at the appropriate receptacle. Students' names must be on the envelope and then credit will be assigned into the cafeteria computer system. Students will sit at tables assigned to them by their teachers. Tables must be left neat and clean when lunch is finished. You can find menus and forms at our lunch program website.

When does school begin?
The student may enter the building on first bell at 7:50 A.M. Students have until the 8:05 bell to get to their homeroom class. Students who are not in homeroom by 8:05 will be marked tardy unless arriving on a late bus.
How will my child be transported to school?
There are no walkers at Shelton Intermediate School. Students are not allowed to walk to or from school at any time.
Students should not be dropped off at school prior to 7:50 A.M. unless they are attending daily breakfast, which begins at 7:45. Teacher supervision begins in the main lobby at 7:50 when the first bell sounds for students to proceed directly to homeroom. Students driven to school in the morning must be dropped off in the designated student drop-off area at the south side of the school. Autos are not to enter the bus loop or interfere with buses entering the bus chute areas during morning drop off or afternoon pick-up. The drop off area at the south side of the building is also used for pick-up at the end of the day. **Reminder: Students who are not in homeroom by 8:05 will be marked tardy per school policy.

Shelton Board of Education policy clearly states that students will ride their assigned school buses and use their assigned bus stops on a daily basis. Students are not allowed to ride a bus other than their own.
However, we recognize that a family emergency or child care concerns may require that a child be occasionally transported to another household. In such an instance, notes from the sending parent/guardian and from the accepting parent/guardian must be brought to the Student Resource Center on the second floor. There are no exceptions to this procedure. Notes will be authorized by the Housemaster and a pass given to the student. The pass should be presented to the bus driver.
School bus transportation cannot be used by students for social purposes, completion of project, or other out-of-school activities, but only for emergency child care situations. No more than one student or siblings will be allowed to travel on another student’s bus for any reason.

Welcome to Shelton Intermediate School (SIS). The “Middle School” years are a unique period of time during which you will notice a tremendous amount of social, emotional, physical, and intellectual growth. To assist students during their years spent at SIS, we have developed this handbook. Please take the time to read and review this handbook with your child / children. This handbook will prove to be a valuable resource to which you can refer to answer a variety of questions regarding a number of policies and procedures which exist at SIS.
At Shelton Intermediate School, our goal is to enable our students to experience social, emotional, physical, and intellectual growth. In addition, we attempt to instill in our students a sense of personal accountability in all areas ranging from academic performance to behavior. Every effort is made to ensure that students are provided with a safe and positive environment in which learning can take place. We promote empathy, courtesy, and respect while teaching our students to appreciate diversity in all of its various forms. Our academic programs are designed around a set of learning principles, or core beliefs, which frame the concept of “learning for understanding” in which students are challenged to apply their knowledge in a variety of contexts.
Parental involvement is critical to ensure the success of each child. It is for this reason that we encourage parents / guardians to be involved in the education of their respective children. Maintaining open lines of communication will allow us to work together with you, the parent / guardian, to do what is in the best interest of your child.
